For John & Kim

I had a delicious little green apple for breakfast, thanks! Also, I met Gabby's mom last night and she is not the person I thought you were talking about. We might be thinking of different Gabby's, or of different moms!

AWANA, Week 2

It is only week 2 and I've already gotten yelled (and by "yelled" I mean, "spoken firmly to") by a parent. The night was going really well, during handbook time several girls had their verses memorized and were able to pass some sections. In order to do that they have to say their verses to me well enough that I can tell they have it memorized - I gave a little help here and there, but honestly, if they have it memorized than they shouldn't need a whole lot of prompting. At dismissal, when all the kids were being picked up, the mother of one of the girls in my group pulled me aside and started talking about how her daughter is always the last to get to recite her verses, and it happened ALL LAST YEAR, she is ready to say the verse but she has to wait SO LONG that she forgets it.

First of all, if you forget the verse in the 3 minutes it takes me to get to you, you don't have it memorized. Second of all, I was going in order of who said they were ready - so if 3 girls say they are ready, and then this girl says she is ready, is this lady expecting me to skip over the first 3 and listen to her daughter first? Of course I couldn't say any of that because we were in church, so I just apologized for last year, explained that I was new this year and I would sure do my best to make sure all the girls were treated fairly.

The more I think about it the angrier I get - Why didn't I think of something better to say? Why was this lady on my case the second night of the year? Why is this little girl using me as an excuse for not knowing her verses? Because, believe me, she did not know her verses! Anyway, I am sending the girl a little postcard today that reminds her that I can listen to her verses at other times, like before AWANA starts, during dismissal, after games, etc. I will do my best to make sure she is listened to, but I can't see myself ignoring the other girls just to focus on her, which is kind of what her mom was asking me to do.

This is why I don't like kids!

When I got to work this morning I kept hearing a squeaking noise - like tennis shoes on the floor. And I was hearing it a lot and getting really annoyed - who was wearing tennis shoes and squeaking them on the floor?! And then I realized it was the smoke detector beeping. I notified the boss of the situation the second he walked through the door, an hour later he sent me home to get my Little Giant because he doesn't have a ladder here tall enough to reach. I sighed pathetically and whined about how hard it was to get the ladder in my car. Then he offered the use of his truck. His big, fat, Ford double cab super duty 4x4. Probably the biggest truck you can buy. I don't really know that for sure, but it is definetly the biggest one in Gardner. So I drove it home to get the ladder and it was awesome, I believe it will be the next vehicle I purchase. I was knocking over mailboxes and running over motorcyles and small children and I never even felt a bump! (Just kidding about the motorcycles, they got out of the way.)

AWANA

Last night was not so bad. I already have a little leach - her name is Gabby and she won't leave me alone. Next week I will find out who is in my group and who my co-leader is. I have to wear a horrible name tag that says "Mrs. DeShon," but I am telling everyone they can call me "Mrs. Katie."

An Update

-Chad sent me flowers at work today. I let him have some friends over and made them dinner last night, I guess he is just saying Thank You. They are daisies, and they came in a beautiful glass vase that has daisies painted all around it, very pretty!

-I caught my pinkie toe on the cart at Walmart last night and it hurt so bad I thought my foot was going to fall off. It still hurt so bad this morning that I couldn't even put my tennis shoes on, I had to wear my clogs. It is getting better now though.

-I went to the "Bodies Revealed" exhibit at Union Station on Saturday with Chad and Darla. Darla loved it, she was a biology major in college, so she is really into sciency stuff. I thought it was cool, but not worth $25.

-We are going on vacation in September. And by "vacation" I mean that Chad and John are going to go on a killer-long bike ride for 2 (?) days, then Kim and I will meet them for the "vacation" part of the trip, during which they will be too exhausted to do anything fun, and as soon as they are rested, Kim and I will be sent home so they can do more bike riding. So really, Kim and I are going on vacation together. Ready Kim?

-Just so you know, if you call 2 seconds before your appointment and say you need to "reschedule/cancel," it isn't really rescheduling/canceling. It's just letting me know that you aren't going to show up.

-Tomorrow is the first Awana night and I'm nervous.

-That is all.

Memo to Coworker

You're nosy. I'm sure you think that saying "I'm being nosy" when you are about to be nosy justifies the nosiness, but in reality, it just makes it worse. I have met plenty of nosy people in my life, but never someone who so blatantly admits it.

Bad Idea

As most of you know, Katie + Kids = temper tantrums. And sometimes the kids get upset too. But somehow I have been convinced to be an Awana Leader at Church. Our Sunday School teacher asked us on Sunday if we would be interested in helping and gave us a brief rundown of what would be expected and we went to an informational meeting last night. Chad is all about this, he commited to it before we even discussed it, so naturally, I said I would do it too. I'm very scared of several things. Like losing control of the kids, telling them something about God/Faith/the Bible etc. that doesn't exactly match what the Church teaches, but I'm mostly scared the kids will hate me. I'm not sure what Andy was thinking when he asked us, it sounded like he was desperate for anyone to help, but wouldn't it be better to be short on leaders than to have one that doesn't like children? The first night is 8/20, so I have a couple of weeks to mentally prepare/freak myself out. Oh, and the worst thing? All the kids wear matching shirts - they are all going to look the same!

For those of you who don't know, "Awana" stands for: Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. It is a program that a lot of Churchs have for kids from age 3 and up, our church does it up to the 6th grade. Chad and I will be working with the 3rd-6th graders. There is game time, lesson time, and book time, which is when they have time to work through their lesson books and memorize verses, etc. There will be skits and music and theme nights and awards - it sounds like lots of fun, I just hope I can handle it.

Brad Paisley Concert

This might be a long one, but stick with me, because the best part is at the end!

Last night my friend Darla and I went to the Brad Paisley concert. We probably walked around for at least 30 minutes looking for our seats - The Sprint Center is huge and we were walking pretty slow. We finally found them - they had to have been the worst seats in the house. Seriously. They were as high as you could get and directly to the side of the stage - we couldn't see Brad or the screens or anything! But before we could sit down, a man stopped us and said "Just the two of you?" We said yes and he offered us 2 floor tickets. He said "The only bad thing is you might have to stand up to see." Anything was better than what we had, so we took them and then started whining to each other about how it had taken us forever to find these seats, and it was going to be impossible to find our new seats! So the nice man said, "Follow me." We have no idea where we are going or who this guy is or what the heck is going on, but we still follow him! He takes us through stairwells, secret hallways, rooms, all places that the general public isn't allowed and he kept flashing his badge at the Sprint security people and saying, "They're with me." Finally he takes us into the VIP lounge, (which was amazing!) and then straight out the other side where we ended up near the floor seats. Then he handed us over to an usher and told us to "Enjoy the show."

We had been walking so fast that we hadn't looked at our new tickets to see where our seats were, so an usher looked at them for us and sent us to the 4th row. Did you catch that? 4th row. Jewel was the opening act and we could see up her dress. She was wearing light blue underwear and she had hairy legs. And the guy who gave us these tickets thought we might not want them because we would have to "stand a lot!!" So we're just hanging out in our awesome 4th row seats, enjoying the concert and Brad starts to sing "Letter to me." There are pictures flashing on the screen behind him, and up comes one of Brad Paisley with his arm around the man who gave us our tickets. So we start to wonder who it is - Surely Brad doesn't just take pictures with random employees and then use them during his concerts! It was during the "dad" part of the song, so we joke around that maybe that was Brad's dad. The concert ends, we go home, I do a little Google research and yes, that was in fact Brad's father. Brad Paisley's father gave us awesome tickets and then escorted us to our seats. Doug Paisley, tour manager and bus driver was just hanging out in the nosebleed section, waiting for 2 hot young things to come along so he could make their concert experience a night they would never forget!

It was an amazing show, I love all of his songs and we would have had a good time no matter where we were sitting, but ohmygosh, Brad Paisley's dad gave us 4th row tickets!!

P.S. Follow the link for a picture of Doug.

I made it to work this morning. I kind of had to come, because the Brad Paisley concert is tonight, so I can't really skip work and then go to a concert with someone I work with. I still don't feel great, but I am functioning.

Brenda, did you watch So You Think You Can Dance last night? The reception was messed up on my TV, but I caught enough to see Twitch's solo (great song choice!) and to see who was voted off. I can't wait for the finale!
