Sunset

Fountain in the Orlando airport.

Greetings from Orlando!  My flight landed around 1, so I went and got my bags, did the rental car paperwork and now I am just waiting on Mandy.  Her flight should land in about 40 minutes and then we will head to Cocoa Beach!

I already saw a palm tree and felt how warm it is when I walked by the doors.  I am concerned that I didn't bring enough shorts.  But I brought 2 swimsuits, and that is all I really need to sit on the beach.

Pictures of Dad

Dad likes cats.

Dad fixes cars.

Dad takes cheesy pictures with KT.

Dad wears cool hats.

Happy Father's Day

My dad is the best.  I don't know what he was like 30 years ago, but I am assuming it is a lot like he is now, which is: dry, sarcastic, and a general disliker of children.  So I have no idea how mom convinced him to have a kid.  She must have tricked him.

However it happened, they ended up with Mandy, the perfect child.  So he must have thought, "Wow, kids aren't as bad as I thought they were!" And then they had me.  (It's no coincidence that I am the last child produced).

I won't go into detail, because this is a family blog, and it makes me look cranky when I say that I don't like kids - let's just say, I am not a fan of most children, and I get that from my father.  Knowing how he feels about kids makes me very grateful for how he acted as my dad - It had to be way harder for him than for a guy who loves kids, but he did a fantastic job.  And trust me, I did not make it easy.

He took me shopping at "Daddy Stores" (apparently some people call them "Hardware Stores") and let me talk to him the entire time.  He bought me peanut M&M's sometimes on those trips, and only made me give him 3 of them.  H e let us have birthday parties with dozens of screaming, obnoxious children at our house and I never once heard him complain.

He walked us down to the bus stop every morning when we were little, even though he was still tired from working the night shift.  He built us a tree-less tree house, made us a building to wait for the bus in and fixed countless things I broke.  And I broke a lot of stuff.  Heck, he still fixes my stuff all the time!

He taught me how to shoot a gun, how to drive a car, tractor and lawn mower (not in that order).  He taught me to bake cookies, make an awesome grilled cheese sandwich and took me out for ice cream.  He spent an unbelievable amount of money on my doctor's appointments and medications.  He threatened bodily harm to every boy who ever even glanced my way.  Everyone in school knew you didn't mess with Katie's dad.  That guy never talked and always stood with his arms crossed and a frown on his face.  It's awesome having a dad that people are scared of, when you know that he is just a big faker.

He bought me my VW Beetle, even though it probably wasn't his first choice.  And he harassed the salesman so much got such a good deal on it, that he was banned from ever coming to that dealership again.  He changed my oil a million times and drove all the way to Branson to fix my electric window when it was stuck down.   He didn't kill me when I flipped my first car driving on a freshly graveled road.

I always knew I would go to college, because he made it clear that it wasn't optional.  When I got into a college that was practically free, he made sure I knew I could still go wherever I wanted.  He paid for 2 weddings in one year (just to clarify here, one was mine and one was my sister's.  I don't want people thinking I got married twice in one year), and I never once heard a word about cost.

My dad has the most self-control of anyone I have ever met.  I wish I had inherited that trait.  He is dependable, consistent, and funny.  He likes John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and 60 Minutes.  He will laugh every single time he sees "Turner & Hooch," and that stupid squirrel on "Christmas Vacation."  He only gives good advice, knows something about everything and can explain things so I don't feel stupid for not knowing in the first place.

When you are a kid, you just see your parents as "Mom and Dad," without realizing they are actually people.  But when you grow up, you start to see them as actual people and realize all the sacrifices they made for you. So thanks dad (and mom), for all the things you did for me.  I know people always say they have the best mom and the best dad, but come on - only 2 people can truthfully say that, and I'm one of them.  Mandy, feel free to chime in.

A List

1.  There are so many boys in my house right now.  Chad is hosting an all day board game playing event.  Honestly, I don't even mind it.  I am used to having lots of boys around from when I went to see Chad in Rolla during college, so it kind of reminds me of the good old days.  I'm not even required to cook dinner, although I did have to order the pizza for them.

2.  I am going to be an aunt!  Chad's sister is pregnant.  With child.  Preggo.  Knocked up.  She is due Labor Day Weekend (ha) and I am just so very grateful that someone else has taken the burden of "First Grandchild" off of my shoulders.  Go Amy!

3.  Went over to Zona Rosa to shop with Mandy today and bought a pair of nude pumps.  I would post a picture, but really, can't you just imagine them?  They are 2.5 inch, patent leather, nude colored pumps.  Pretty much the most boring shoe on the planet.  But I needed them.

4.  Mandy is taking my first-born cat away from me on Wednesday.  He is hiding from me because I am annoying him with all of the hugging and crying and begging him not to leave.  It will be fine in the long run - Mandy will have a cat, (she loves cats), Camry will be the only cat in the house, (Camry doesn't love cats), and Chad's allergies might be a little better.

A Celebrity Crush

I am going to have to come back to "An Old Photo" when I have time to scan one at work.

My celebrity crush is definitely Ryan Reynolds.  Google a photo of him if you don't know who I'm talking about - You'll thank me after you see it.

Something I Bought Recently

I have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of black boots for several months.  After buying and returning many pairs from Zappos.com, I decided to give up.  If my perfect boots are not within the thousands of boots at Zappos, then they don't exist.

Problem is, I asked for Zappos gift cards for Christmas in order to purchase my boots, so I needed to buy something else.

Ladies and Gentleman, I would like you to meet my new wallet:

I loved my old wallet.  It was red.  It was made of tiny seatbelts.  But it didn't keep me very organized.  There weren't enough pockets to hold all the different cards and it was too easy to just throw stuff in there.

As you can see, this one has many pockets and there is really no option but to stay organized.  If I just stick stuff in there then it will probably fall out.  So far it is working great.

Pet Peeves

Not only did I skip a day, but I also mixed up the order of the prompts.

I honestly have so many pet peeves that I couldn't even begin to name them all.  I am easily annoyed.

Some of the major ones are:

- Mouth noises.  Like smacking, gum popping, etc.  Basically any noise that is made with your mouth, I don't wanna hear it.

- People who are late for their appointments and don't apologize.  People who say "I will be there in 10 minutes" and actually get there in 20 minutes.  People who are late for their appointments every single time.  If I have to lie and tell you that your appointment is 15 minutes before the actual time because I know you will be late, that is a problem.

- People who come to claim their dog from the animal shelter, but won't put them on a leash when they leave the building.  They always claim that the dog "will stay right by them."  Really?  Then how did they get picked up by animal control in the first place?

Something I Crave

The most common cravings I have are Sleep and Chipotle.

This was a horrible prompt - I just don't know what else to say about cravings.  It's not like I have to explain why I crave these things - everyone craves sleep and Chipotle!

Snow Day

I am so sick of hearing about the snow.  I was finally sent home from work around 2:30 yesterday afternoon.  I made it to within a few blocks of our house before getting stuck.  A guy saw me and tried to shovel me out, but I wasn't even close to moving.  So I walked home.

Chad was already home, so a little later we walked down to try and get the car off to the side, so it wasn't right in the middle of the road.  But Chad decided we should try and get it all the way home.  There was so much shoveling.  And going forward and backward and forward and backward and we couldn't see anything and his beard was completely frozen over and my mascara was all over my face and we were a mess and cold and I hate the snow.

Another guy was helping us shovel and then a 3rd guy decided to contribute by leaning against his truck, drinking a cup of coffee and telling us that "The new Mini Coopers have 4-wheel drive!!"  I wanted to hit him with my shovel and bury him in a snowdrift.

After being pushed, shoveled and even towed part-way home, we got Minnie halfway into the driveway and quit.  About 10 minutes later the doorbell rang and my neighbor was there telling me I should try once more to get the car in the garage.  So I get my boots back on, peel Chad off the floor and go back out.  Two of our neighbors had completely shoveled our entire driveway!  One of the neighbors put down some sand and with 3 guys pushing, Minnie was finally inside!

Chad stayed home today, and I am off on Wednesdays anyway, so we are just staying home and warm.  They still haven't plowed our road, and I'm afraid if they don't by tomorrow then I still won't be going anywhere.
